Fire is fast. In less than 30 seconds, a small flame can turn into a major fire. Follow these important tips to help keep your home safe.

Smoke alarms save lives. Put them on every level of your home and near bedrooms. Test them monthly and replace alarms that are 10 years old.

Cooking is the leading cause of home fires. Stay in the kitchen while cooking, turn burners off if you leave, and keep flammable items away from the stove.

Heating is another major cause of fires. Keep heaters and fireplaces at least three feet from anything that can burn. Turn heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.

Smoking increases fire risk. Always smoke outside, fully put out cigarettes, and use sturdy ashtrays.

Children and older adults need extra protection. Keep hot items out of reach, teach escape plans, make sure exits are clear, and help those who may need assistance.
