The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance is reminding residents that the deadline to file personal income tax returns and pay any taxes owed is Tuesday, April 15, by 11:59 p.m. EDT.
“With the April 15 tax filing deadline approaching, we encourage taxpayers to visit our website at www.tax.ny.gov for last-minute filing assistance,” said Acting Commissioner Amanda Hiller. “From tax filing tips to free e-filing options, we’re here to help taxpayers quickly and easily meet their obligations.”
Free Filing Options Available
New York State offers multiple free e-filing services, including Direct File, Free File, and other no-cost online tools. Eligibility depends on income level and other factors.
Taxpayers who earned less than $200,000 in 2024—or $250,000 for joint filers—may qualify to use Direct File, a free, mobile-friendly system available in both English and Spanish. The program allows residents to file both federal and state returns through a single portal.
Information and eligibility for all free filing options are available on the department’s website at www.tax.ny.gov.
Support for Last-Minute Filers
For answers to common tax questions or guidance on filing, taxpayers are encouraged to visit the department’s Filing Season Resource Center online. The Personal Income Tax Call Center will also offer extended hours leading up to the filing deadline.
Estimated Payments and Refund Tracking
Those who made estimated tax payments last year should verify their account balance through their Individual Online Services account before filing. This ensures that payments are reported accurately on their return.
Taxpayers can check the status of their state tax refund using the “Check Your Refund” tool at www.tax.ny.gov. It remains the fastest way to monitor refund processing.
Extension Requests and Payment Options
If unable to file by April 15, taxpayers can request an automatic extension of time to file. However, an extension does not delay the payment deadline—any taxes owed must still be paid by April 15 to avoid interest and penalties.
Taxpayers who cannot pay the full amount owed are still advised to file on time. Partial payments can help reduce additional charges. Various payment plans and options are detailed on the Tax Department website.
