State Sen. Jeremy Cooney on Friday announced a new $1 million state grant initiative to support Rochester-area nonprofits as many face threats of reduced federal funding.

The program, called “Reinvesting in Organizations that Care” (ROC) Grants, will provide capital funding to local organizations that serve vulnerable populations across Monroe County. Nonprofits can apply for a share of the funds to support building improvements, equipment, and other infrastructure needs.

“While the federal government is cutting vital support to community-based organizations, we are stepping up to meet the needs of Rochesterians,” said Cooney, a Democrat who represents the 56th Senate District. “ROC Grants are about proving that New York will never stop prioritizing the needs of vulnerable populations.”

The announcement comes as many local organizations report rising demand for services, paired with shrinking budgets. Simeon Banister, president and CEO of the Rochester Area Community Foundation, called the new funding “critical.”

“We’re hearing every day from local nonprofits that the demand for services is growing — while resources are shrinking,” Banister said. “This investment will help keep essential programs running at a time when they are needed most.”

Cooney was joined by representatives from the Rochester Area Community Foundation, Council of Agency Executives, United Way of Greater Rochester and the Finger Lakes, and the Greater Rochester Health Foundation.

Applications for the ROC Grants are open through July 4. Award recipients are expected to be announced later this summer. More information is available at rocsenator.com/rocgrants.
