Gingrich, a former Speaker of the House, whose presidential campaign is on the rise only a few weeks before the primaries commence, has made harsh remarks against Romney. For months, the Georgian republican had refused to criticize his rivals and had focused on President Barack Obama. It appears as though this has finished. Calling the ex-governor of Massachusetts a political opportunist, Gingrich also has said that it is one thing to change one’s mind in the presence of new evidence, and another is to change one’s position in order to obtain political advantages. “It is incorrect to adopt positions radically different in function with one’s electoral necessities; then the people will ask, “What will you tell me next time?” opined Gingrich last Monday at the radio station WSC-FM before initiating a three-day tour in South Carolina. Romney has changed his opinions about gay rights and abortion since his first political campaign in 1994. Since this failed effort, he has publically leaned towards the right. This has not been sufficient to convince some, including Gingrich. “We believe that there should be a strong conservative alternative to Mitt Romney”, states Gingrich. “Nobody but Christ has been perfect”, said Gingrich to WSC-FM. “Likewise I do not say that I am the perfect candidate. I only say that I am much more conservative than Mitt Romney and much more electable than any other”. Gingrich also faces questioning about his position on immigration. His adversaries have insinuated that he would offer amnesty to illegal immigrants. “I am in favor of controlling the border. I am against amnesty. I am very disappointed that at least one of my friends has gone down that road in the last few days saying things that she knows are not certain”, affirmed Gingrich in reference to Michelle Machmann, a Minnesota congresswoman that brought up the topic at dinner.
