| Latina To Watch: Mayca Perez |
|
While at East High she bonded with nurturing, caring, loving, good educators who allowed Ms. Pérez to grow and flourish as an individual and student. One educator in particular, Mrs. Dolores Gonzalez-Habes, became her mentor, friend, guide through not only high school but the relationship has lasted to this day. Mrs. Habes took time to get to know Maycanitza’s family, invested lots of time mentoring, assisted with college visits, gave energy and time to listen, nurtured and supported, and generally prepared Ms. Pérez for the real world. . Maycanitza graduated from East High School in 1995. In the fall of 1995 she began her studies in the College of Arts & Sciences at Syracuse University but transferred to the University of Rochester’s College of Arts and Sciences in her sophomore year. She graduated in 1999 with a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish. Immediately after graduation she enrolled in the Fifth Year in Teaching Program at the Margaret Warner Graduate School of Education and Human Development. In June of 2000 she earned a Master of Science in Education with a concentration in Secondary Education and Spanish 7 – 12. While at the U of R she was heavily involved in Latino issues. She belonged to SALSA, a group of students supporting Latino issues and was in charge of organizing entertainment and social events. The Rochester City School District hired her in 2000 to teach foreign language, Spanish, at Jefferson Middle School. She remained there for three years before moving on to East High School. When asked about why did she enter the educational field Ms. Pérez replied, “ I saw myself in the students and remembered how I had connected with educators and how this inspired me to do the same.” She saw this opportunity as one in which she could mentor/guide students; motivate them to reach beyond what they see. She was able to connect with students well and helped inspire them by relating personal tales of struggle and success, embedding culture in the curriculum, creating meaningful interactions, engaging students to motivate them, allowing situations where students can reflect These are requirements for student success as Ms. Pérez sees it. She finished her administrative certificate requirements and became a House Administrator dealing with student management issues in 2005. The reason for leaving the classroom was to be able to continue to mold students, to allow them to think about their future, follow their dreams, and take the necessary steps to achieve their goals. She also wanted to experience another level from within the educational field. As House Administrator she dealt with a work load of approximately 400 students. Her goal was to use behavior and disciplinary modifications to assist students change their negative behavior. She delivered lessons in self-esteem, leadership, community connections, and field trips to expose students to different environments/ways of comportment/life experiences. She also led a Girls Group for the same purpose but also to demonstrate women’s impact on society and their own personal role within society. Today, Ms. Pérez is a program administrator. She is in charge of the department of Foreign Language, ESOL, Art, Music, English Language Learners, and the Extended Day Program for credit recovery. She also oversees 24 teachers and over 400 students. She continues to work towards creating a positive behavioral environment, improving student achievement, and a positive, effective instructional program for teachers. As involved as she is in the East High community she still schedules time to participate in LEAPP, Leadership Empowerment Aspiring Principal’s Program. This program assists aspiring principals to reach their goal. Ms. Pérez hopes to become a principal at the elementary or high school level. She feels that with younger children you can start to create life long changes that lead to life long learning and achievement of dreams. She would like to lead a school that contains a Bilingual or Dual language Program. Maycanitza Perez’s philosophy on education and children has evolved through the years. She fully believes that all students can learn; that they should come to school prepared to learn, establish positive relationships, be prepared to take advantage of opportunities as they arise. The relationships students develop with adults lead to student achievement because meaningful relationships are key for students to make a bond that motivate them to succeed. Students need to learn how to advocate for themselves in appropriate ways, look for positive opportunities, and be prepared to take advantage of them. One way this is done is to connect eighth graders to opportunities such as the Rochester Children’s Fund which provides resources throughout high school to those who qualify. The students would secure financial assistance as long they maintain a GPA of 3.25. Ms. Pérez believes that students should: “Never let go of their dreams, no matter the obstacles they may encounter; do the right thing at all times to encourage the heart of others to become positive change agents in society.” Her path exemplifies the struggles, the reflections, the satisfaction that comes when you set your path to achieving your dreams and succeed. Ms. Pérez thanks her parents, her sister, and her family for their unconditional support, love, for being by her side, and helping her become the person she is. Being Latina has presented opportunities and obstacles and through it all Ms. Pérez has been able to triumph. Maycanitza Pérez – Latina, educator, mentor, leader, friend to and supporter of students.
ORGULLO HISPANO
