In an environment where academic achievement lags appreciably behind our non-hispanic counterparts, it is noteworthy and very appropriate to acknowledge the outstanding achievements of our Latino scholars.

But all too often, even high achievers cringe from the opportunity to extend their education beyond high school given the financial constraints they face.
Enter the world of Hispanic scholarships.

One of the biggest deterrents to higher education among Hispanic students has historically been finances or the lack thereof. Yet, there is a pool of resources available to students just for the asking. In most cases the only caveat is that they are of Hispanic descent and show academic promise.

Grace Tillinghast, a retired Kodak employee who herself has an illustrious array of accomplishments within the Rochester community since her relocation from her native Argentina, is responsible for single handedly garnering over $1.3 million in scholarship monies for such students, in one year alone; nothing to turn your nose at for a woman who carved a name for herself through savvy relationship building and a worthy cause.

Ms. Tillinghast is currently chair of the Rochester Hispanic Business Association, Monroe Community College Trustee, vice-Chair of the Arts and Cultural Council for Greater Rochester,
Board member of Do the Right Thing at the police department and she is co-owner of The Battery, a local baseball camp for kids.

Tillinghast began her quest to find financial support for students she mentored while still working fulltime at Kodak. In 2007 she was approached by Hilda Rosario Escher, director of Ibero-American Action League, to direct the scholarship program for the Hispanic Scholarship Endowment Fund. The fund was established some 20 years ago with contributions from businesses and individuals from the community. The Rochester Area Foundation manages the fund, and the interest earned every year is awarded to local Hispanic students.

In 2007, the first year of Tillinghast’s involvement, $16,000 in scholarships was awarded to eight students.

In 2008, she suggested to use Ibero’s annual gala event as a forum to recognize all Hispanic students and to increase the number of scholarships adapting the model followed by other organizations. Thanks to the generosity of many individuals, businesses, organizations and colleges, $230,000 was awarded in scholarships.

Last year, 2009, the number of scholarships and scholars reached a number they could not have imagined, as it topped the million dollar mark at $1,330,000.

“I was satisfied when we had reached the same level of the previous year at $230,000.When we surpassed that number to $1 million, then 1.3million in the very last week, I was stunned! It proves that everything is possible in God’s vineyard especially in this generous country” was Tillinghast’s comment in achieving this milestone.

Monroe Community College, Nazareth College, St. John Fisher College the University of Rochester and RIT are among the area colleges and universities offering scholarships to Hispanic students.

“I plan to continue to seek scholarship funds for deserving students who want to continue their studies at the college level,” said Tillinghast.

To qualify for the scholarships students must be of Hispanic descent but that’s not all, “Students must have a minimum “B” average to apply for a scholarship,” she explains. “A point system is given for SAT/ACT scores, high school transcript, and extracurricular activities.”

Tillinghast’s advice to all students is, “study, apply yourself, be dedicated and the doors will open to you.”

Dado el ambiente feroz académico donde los estudiantes latinos son más conocidos por las estadísticas que indican su abandono a los estudios, es muy apropiado y digno de notar a aquellos estudiantes sobresalientes de descendencia latina. Lamentablemente, muy a menudo aun los estudiantes de alto puntaje rehúsan de seguir estudiando a nivel universitario debido a una escasez financiera. Sin embargo, recursos en forma de becas abundan, y he aquí entramos al mundo de becas dirigidas a hispanos.

Uno de los impedimentos más grandes entre los estudiantes hispanos para continuar la educación en la universidad ha sido la falta de finanzas para cubrir gastos escolares. Sin embargo los recursos están disponibles con solo el sencillo esfuerzo de pedirlos. En la mayoría de casos, solo se les requiere que sean de descendencia hispana y que demuestren ambición hacia los estudios.

Grace Tillinghast, una profesional jubilada de Kodak, con un ilustre currículo de  logros  en la comunidad de Rochester desde su traslado de su nativa Argentina, es responsable por haber recaudado más de $1.3 millones de dólares en becas para tales estudiantes en solo un año; una cifra bastante impresionante para una mujer cuyas destrezas en unir brechas en relaciones han facilitado sus esfuerzos para una noble causa.

Actualmente, Grace es presidenta de la Asociación de Negocios Hispanos de Rochester, miembro de la junta directiva de Monroe Community College, vicepresidenta del Concilio de Arte y  Cultura de Rochester, miembro de la junta directiva del programa, Do The Right thing del departamento de Policía de Rochester, y co-propietaria de The Battery, un campamento local de beisbol para niños. En el pasado ha estado envuelta en una serie de organizaciones de la  comunidad.

El comienzo de su búsqueda para ayudar a estudiantes latinos empezó aun mientras trabajaba en Kodak. En el 2007, Hilda Escher, directora de la Liga de Acción Ibero-Americana, le pidió que presidiera el programa de Fondos de Becas para hispanos. El fondo se estableció hace 20 años con contribuciones de negocios e individuos en la comunidad. La Fundación del Área de Rochester maneja este fondo. Lo que devenga el fondo anualmente se da en becas a estudiantes del área siguiendo un proceso de selección.

En el 2007, el primer año de su participación, se otorgaron ocho becas por un total de $16,000 dólares.

Para el 2008, Grace le sugirió a Ibero transformar la cena anual y entrega de premios en un foro donde todos los estudiantes hispanos fuesen reconocidos. Aceptada su idea, gracias a la generosidad de individuos, negocios, organizaciones y colegios, ese año se entregaron becas por $230,000.

En el año pasado, 2009, la cantidad de becas y becados alcanzó un número no imaginado y el total sumó $1,330,000 ,(un millón trescientos treinta mil).

“Al principio me sentí satisfecha por haber alcanzado la misma cifra del año anterior. Luego, se superó la cifra y se llegó al millón, y la última semana a $1, 300,000. Quiere decir que todo es posible en la viña del Señor y especialmente en este país tan generoso,” comenta Grace después de superar sus propias metas en recaudaciones.

Monroe Community College, Nazareth College, St. John Fisher College,  la Universidad de Rochester, y RIT son entre otras, las universidades que ofrecen becas para estudiantes hispanos.

Cuando le pregunté sobre sus planes para el futuro, la respuesta de Grace fue la siguiente, “pues seguir consiguiendo becas para todos aquellos que se dedican a estudiar y quieren continuar sus estudios a nivel universitario.”

Nos explica cómo son elegidos los estudiantes. “Los estudiantes deben tener un mínimo de “B” para solicitar las becas; uno o ambos padres deben ser de origen hispano y deben presentar todos los documentos que se requieren. Hay un sistema de puntaje para el SAT/ACT, el promedio del estudiante durante la escuela secundaria y sus actividades fuera de la escuela.”

Su consejo para todos estudiantes es, “estudien, aplíquense, dedíquense y las puertas se les abrirán.”
