If you were to guess the age of the chairperson for the 2011 Latinas Unidas Reconocimiento Awards, coordinator for the Miss Puerto Rico of Rochester pageant, Borinquen Dance Theatre instructor and dancer, family educator for parents of infants and toddlers, a student, a mother and a wife, you would guess she is in her mid forties or so! But the truth is that Ingrid Colón is only 30 years old and she does all of that and much more.

Although Ingrid’s parents are from Coamo, Puerto Rico, she is indeed a native of Rochester New York.  She attended the city schools until the sixth grade, when she was blessed with a scholarship from Nazareth middle school and continued her education within the Catholic School.  She attended Bishop Kearney for two years and graduated from Nazareth Academy in 1999.  Although her marriage and son took over part of her educational years, she recently went back to school and will soon complete her Bachelors degree in Social work from Brockport College. 

Still in her early twenties Ingrid worked for PRYD in several capacities, but her last position was as supervisor for Bienestar, an HIV prevention program for youth. Since leaving PRYD, Ingrid has been working as a home visitor for the ABC Home Base Early Head Start program. Her primary responsibility is to bring developmentally appropriate activities for infants and toddlers, but she also assists the families with their basic needs and reaching self-sufficiency. Although Ingrid enjoys her current job, her passion is in working with youth and it is part of her drive to someday work in a hospital setting as a mental health counselor for adolescents.

As Ingrid continues to work on her degree, she finds herself involved with youth in other capacities. For the past four years she has volunteered as the Miss Puerto Rico of Rochester Pageant coordinator. She is responsible of recruiting and preparing the young ladies for the big event. She organizes a series of workshops with the help of community influential Latinas that ranges from education to leadership. “The purpose of the workshops is to make the girls aware of the different Latinas in leadership position in our community and what they can inspire to be in the future.” She continues to share how rewarding it is to see the young ladies blossom during the seven to eight months of preparation. “It is my hope that Coralis Laboy, my co-partner and I make a positive impact in all the girls we work with and serve as role models.”

Ingrid’s other passion is Borinquen Dance Theatre. She has been dancing with BDT since the age of sixteen and for the past two years has been actively involved. “I feel that dance keeps me ground with all that I do and is a way to express myself artistically.” Her dancing experience has helped her with the pageant as well. “The pageant always opens with a group dance and I have been able to use my dancing experience in helping those girls that may not feel confident as dancers.” she adds. For Ingrid being part of the pageant and BDT is like bringing the best of the two worlds she loves, dancing and helping young Puerto Rican girls develop, learn and be proud of who they are.

Ingrid is also a wife and mother. She has been married for 5 years to Luis Gonzalez and together for 10 years. They recently purchased their second home which they are remodeling together. When I asked Ingrid how does she balance home, work, school and her involvement in the community this is what she shared, “To be honest, I don’t know how I do it all, very stressful at times but with the grace of God and the love and support of my family I have managed to accomplish it all, but I have realized that even though it’s a lot I will manage.” Ingrid became a mother at the age of 22 and she feels that she is setting an example for her son Giovanni and her step daughter Yasmine. “I feel that I’m showing them that even though I was a mother at a young age I can still accomplish my goals and dreams.” Ingrid also shared that both children inspire her and give her the energy to she often needs to continue with all her responsibilities.

Ingrid is truly an inspiration for all Latinas young and old.  Her determination and hard work has brought her this far. However, her kind and humble manners set her side from the rest. Si tuvieras que adivinar la edad de la presidenta para los Premios de Reconocimiento de  Latinas Unidas 2011, coordinadora para el certamen de Miss Puerto Rico de Rochester, instructora de Borinquen Dance Theatre y bailarina, educadora  familiar para los padres de recién nacidos y niños pequeños, estudiante, madre y esposa, ¡dirías que está a mediados de los cuarenta años, más o menos! Pero la verdad es que Ingrid Colón tiene sólo 30 años de edad y ella hace todo eso y mucho más.

Aunque los padres de Ingrid son de Coamo, Puerto Rico, de hecho ella es nativa de Rochester, Nueva York.  Asistió a las escuelas de la ciudad hasta el sexto grado, cuando ella fue bendecida con una beca de la escuela intermedia de Nazareth y continuó su educación dentro de la escuela católica.  Asistió a Bishop Kearney  durante dos años y se graduó en la Academia de Nazareth en 1999.  Aunque su matrimonio y su hijo tomaron parte de sus años educativos, ella recientemente regresó a la universidad y pronto completará su bachillerato en Trabajo Social de Brockport College.

Aún en sus veinte años Ingrid trabajó para PRYD en varias capacidades, pero su última posición fue como supervisora de Bienestar, un programa de prevención de VIH para los jóvenes. Desde su salida de PRYD, Ingrid ha estado trabajando como visitante de hogares  para el programa de ABC Home Base Early Head Start. Su principal responsabilidad es hacer las actividades de desarrollo apropiadas para niños y bebés, pero también presta asistencia a las familias con sus necesidades básicas y alcanzando autosuficiencia. Aunque Ingrid disfruta de su trabajo actual, su pasión es trabajar con la juventud y es parte de su meta trabajar algún día en un hospital como una consejera de salud mental para adolescentes.

Mientras Ingrid sigue trabajando en su grado universitario, se encuentra envuelta como voluntaria con la juventud en otras capacidades. Durante los últimos cuatro años ha sido,de manera voluntaria, la Coordinadora del certamen Miss Puerto Rico de Rochester. Ella es responsable de reclutar y preparar a las señoritas para el gran evento. Ella organiza una serie de talleres, con la ayuda de la influyente comunidad de latinas, que oscilan entre educación y liderazgo. "El propósito de los talleres es concientizar a las chicas de las diferentes latinas en posiciones de liderazgo en nuestra comunidad y lo que pueden inspirarse en el futuro". Ella sigue a compartir lo gratificante que es ver a las señoritas madurar durante los siete u ocho meses de preparación. "Es mi esperanza que Coralis Laboy, mi colega, y yo hagamos un impacto positivo en todas las chicas con las que  trabajamos  y servimos como modelos a seguir".

Otra pasión de Ingrid es Borinquen Dance Theatre. Ella ha estado bailando con BDT desde los 16 años y en los últimos dos años ha participado activamente. "Siento que la danza me mantiene firme en todo lo que hago y es una manera de expresarme artísticamente". Su experiencia en el baile le ha ayudado con el certamen. "El certamen siempre comienza con un baile de grupo y he podido utilizar mi experiencia bailando para ayudar a esas chicas que no se sienten seguras como bailarinas." agrega. Para Ingrid ser parte del certamen y BDT  es como lo mejor de dos mundos que ella ama, bailar y ayudar a las jóvenes puertorriqueñas a desarrollarse, aprender y estar orgullosas de lo que son.

Ingrid es, también, esposa y madre. Ha estado casada por 5 años con Luis González y han estado juntos durante 10 años. Adquirieron recientemente su segunda casa que están remodelando juntos. Cuando le pregunté cómo ella equilibraba la casa, el  trabajo, la universidad y su participación en la comunidad esto es lo que ella compartió, "para ser honesta, que no sé cómo lo hago todo, muy estresante a veces pero con la gracia de Dios y el amor y el apoyo de mi familia  he logrado  manejarlo todo, pero me he dado cuenta que a pesar de que es mucho conseguiré manejarlo.”  Ingrid se convirtió en madre a la edad de 22 años y siente que ella está siendo un ejemplo para su hijo Giovanni y su hijastra Yasmine. "Siento que estoy demostrándoles que a pesar de que yo fui una madre joven puedo todavía cumplir mis metas y sueños". Ingrid también compartió que ambos niños le inspiran y le dan la energía que ella a menudo necesita para continuar con todas sus responsabilidades.

Ingrid es verdaderamente una inspiración para todas las latinas jóvenes y mayores.  Su determinación y trabajo duro la han llevado hasta aquí. Sin embargo, su generosidad y modales humildes la han distinguido del resto.
