The first annual commemoration to the Latino elderly took place on Wednesday September 28 at 6pm, in Los Flamboyanes Community Hall located at 100 Borinquen Plaza. The event is one of the many activities sponsored by the City of Rochester under the Hispanic Heritage Committee lead by Raquel Serrano who serves as president.

The event was to give tribute to senior citizen, Don Pedro Núñez, who has contributed to the local community for the last 50 years with his talents and values.
 
Pedro Núñez was taught by his older brother how to play the Cuatro, a ten string guitar consider to be the National Instrument of Puerto Rico and with that the beginning of a life dedicated to preserve the Puerto Rican culture. In the 1950s he moved from Cayey, Puerto Rico to Rochester to be with family members. In the 1960s he established a band named Jacaguas that performed Spanish music in country clubs and other venues around the area. Don Pedro also established a band for the Mount Carmel Catholic Church and was a force in the creation of the “Fiesta Jibara” for the same church. In 1979 with the support of the Puerto Rican Arts and Cultural Center, the New York State Council on the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Arts, he recorded an album entitled “Rochester se Puertorriqueñiza”

Now Don Pedro Núñez serves the community as a mentor, coach and role model. He has been a loving husband to his wife, Flora, an incredible father of two who have given him five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

When asked how he felt about his award Pedro told us, “I really wasn’t expecting anything, all I have done its for my love of music, Puerto Rican culture and of course my community.” The event was a festival of folk music, traditional Spanish food and good memories. Another person excited was Raquel Serrano, “ I am very happy with the event, we all have work so hard to make this and all other events a success, and we hope that we can continue not only celebrating Hispanic culture but also be able to celebrate the life of our Latino senior citizens every year.”

Honrando a Nuestros Viejitos

La primera conmemoración anual a los ancianos latinos tomó lugar miércoles, 28 de septiembre a las 6pm, en el salon de la comunidad en Los Flamboyanes localizado en 100 Borinquen Plaza. El evento es una de las muchas actividades patrocinadas por la Ciudad de Rochester bajo el Comite de la Herencia Hispana dirijido por Raquel Serrano quien sirve como Presidenta.

El evento fue para dar homenaje a el anciano, Don Pedro Núñez, quien ha contribuido a la comunidad local durante los últimos 50 años, con sus talentos y valores.
 
Pedro Núñez, fue ensenado por su hermano mayor a tocar el cuatro, una guitarra de diez cuerdas considerada el Instrumento Nacional de Puerto Rico y con eso el comienzo de una vida dedicada a preservar la cultura Puertorriqueña. En los 1950, el se mudo de Cayey, Puerto Rico hacia Rochester para estar con familiares. En los 1960 establecio una banda llamada Jacaguas que tocaba musica en español en “country clubs” y otros establecimientos alrededor del area. Don Pedro tambien establecio una banda para la Iglesia Catolica Monte Carmelo y fue una fuerza en la creacion de la Fiesta Jibarra para la misma iglesia. En 1979 con el apoyo del Centro de Cultura y Arte Puertoriqueña, el Concilio de Arte del Estado de Nueva York, y el Fondo Nacional de las Artes, el grabo un album titulado, Rochester se Puertorriqueñiza.

Ahora Don Pedro Núñez sirve a la comunidad como mentor, entrenador y modelo a seguir. El ha sido un amoroso esposo para su esposa, Flora, un increible padre para sus dos hijos, los cuales le han dado cinco nietos y cuatro bisnietos.

Cuando se le pregunto como se sentia por su reconocimiento Pedro nos dijo, “Yo realmente no me esperaba nada, todo lo que he hecho es por mi amor por la musica, la cultura puertorriqueña , y por supuesto my comunidad.” El evento fue un festival de música folklórica, comida tradicional hispana y buenas memorias. Otra persona emocionada fue Raquel Serrano, “Me siento muy contenta con el evento, todos trabajamos tan fuerte para hacer de este y todos los demas eventos un exito; y esperamos no tan solo continuar celebrando la cultura Hispana si no tambien poder celebrar la vida de nuestros ancianos Latinos cada año.”
