Latina to Watch - Margarita Gonzalez Reyes

Margarita Gonzalez Reyes, is a leader in the field of Bilingual Special Education in New York State. She works through the Regional Special Education Technical Assistance Support Centers (RSE-TASC) and offers training and information through workshops and technical assistance on issues related to effective practices for special education and bilingual students as well as English language learners and educators. Margarita offers training to more than 71 school districts and 4 BOCES areas, including the Rochester City School District. She has more than 15 years of experience and has made her mark defending, promoting and educating our Hispanic community.

Margarita was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico. She says her decision to move to Buffalo, New York in 1973 "came with the same mentality as others who move to the states; to try to establish a better future for my family,"

At the age of 17 and as a single parent Margarita found herself in a country where learning he language (English) would be the basis for her to have a successful life. "It was not easy, I began to study little by little, first studying for my GED and then gradually move to study at the university."

Latino to Watch - Dr. Constantino Fernandez

Dr. Constantino Fernandez is Associate Clinical Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Rochester. Born in Nicaragua, Dr. Fernandez received his medical degree from the University of Puebla in Mexico, and later completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, New York. Throughout his career, Dr. Fernandez has shown a special interest in emphasizing and promoting the health of Hispanic women, both in his OB / GYN practice, as well as his work around the world as an ambassador of medicine for female healthcare. As part of this work, he had established his remarkable commitment to the community, and proudly earned the name as "El Doctor de las mujeres pobres".
